Day 17: Sierra Blanca to Van Horn (32 miles) March 29

Said farewell to Sierra Blanca Historic Lodge. The Lodge was very rustic and sandwiched between Interstate 10 and a railroad. A train passed by every hour so it wasn’t my best night of sleep. Headed out on a road parallel to the interstate then onto the interstate. We passed a sign stating we were officially in central time.

We arrived at the Holiday Inn Express and our rooms were ready. There was a dust storm brewing. Glad it was a short day or the ride would have been considered a “weather event” and ended early. By the afternoon, the wind was blowing sand and the mountains were no longer visible.

Fun fact: Van Horn is notable as the place where Jeff Bezos bought land to launch his Blue Origin rocket into space bringing space tourism to town. 🚀

Tomorrow we ride to Ft. Davis. 91 miles. Hoping winds are calm and in our favor! 🤞🏻
